Developing

At the beginning,

when I knew that the direction of choosing sound for screen required me to pick a video (clip) and make a sound track for it, I literally didn’t have any idea. Even though this clip could be a part from the movie, animation or even a game.

Then I’m trying to find my inspiration from my daily life. I usually enjoy though sketching to record the beauty I see in my life or my current feelings. Also, that I like and I am keen to watch animation and play some nostalgic pixel games, such as Pac-Man is my favourite game.

I knew that the clip I chose should be the thing I interested in at first.

‘A Wilding Lady Dances for Flamingos Kissing’
‘A Circus Monkey Family’
‘Loving by Toes’
‘I am Eating Snacks’
‘Pretty Girl’
‘Pretty Boy’
‘My Home, Lamps are Necessaries’
‘Trust me’
‘Fridge’
‘From the Ocean’
‘the Initial Point’
‘Who Are you?’

Then, an idea came up.

What if I choose a nostalgic anime, and making the soundtrack for it?

‘ Boundary Condition III Anniversary ‘

Performer: Roxanna Albayti presents SHEKARE AZADI

‘A performative conversation about generations, the conflict between the inner and outside worlds, and the need to face and find healing space. In honour of Iranian women, the audience is invited to participate in a diasporic quest for freedom. created in cooperation with Arghavan Majd, Rebecca Moradalizadeh & Zora Za, Sur, Marat Ingeldeev, and Soraya S.

This was the most impressive performance among the six performances at this event. This performance made good use of the immersion space. In a church with a very high convex roof, it is very easy to produce ethereal echoes. The performer Roxanna Albayti made good use of this. With her excellent natural voice and the blessing of clean and rich cello playing, the performance was very immersive and unsatisfying. After watching her performance, I was deeply fascinated by her cello skills and her singing. Also, that I feel how important it is for creators to make good use of the space in a performance to perform or design better creations.

In the whole performance, I was very impressed and interested in this ambience style performance. When the singer’s voice came out, I felt as if I was healed. It also made me realize that whether it is a musical performance or ‘Sound for Screen’ works, the background needs to be related to the characteristics of the performer or the role.

‘All We Imagine as Light’

‘ Mumbai, as depicted by Kapadia, is a slow poison of apathy and monotony; although it is crowded with people, there is no indication of connection or affection amongst them. This loneliness becomes internalised before you realise it. ‘

Director: Payal Kapadia

Music Composer: Shritiman Das

The style of the film is quite blue and tranquil under a peaceful way. Even though it shows the truths and problems of arrange marriage, outsiders whom are struggling and the inequality between male and female in Mumbai, Indian society.

This film took during the raining season, when I was watching the movie, I can feel the shooting condition and the environment is literally an important key to the full film. Which the background mixes the sound of raining, and the raining season makes the movie seems more vivid and emotional.

Secondary Research

This is a work I saw in the Musée de l’Orangerie when I traveled to France some time ago, in this video. The artist wants to reflect the history of South America. I found it very interesting after watching it. From the sound design to the picture design, it fully makes people feel the original and natural power. Gives me some ideas for my project, I can compare the future world with the original human natural world in the audio to highlight my theme.

Reflection

As far as my intentions go, I’m hoping that by working on this project, people won’t become overly dependent on electronics. Using a computer or smartphone is not required to help us keep track of all the information we encounter every day. Taking notes with a notepad and pen will make it easier for us to recall information and make us more quick. Instead than allowing technology to limit and control human beings, human beings should be allowed to use and develop technology. Additionally, environmental pollution is becoming a more serious problem, and there are currently many unexpected natural forest fires that are also destroying trees. In order to raise awareness of the state of the planet’s natural ecosystem, individuals must discover strategies to rescue it. By mimicking the sounds that some mechanised animals and plants may not be able to generate, I aim to satirise the environmental issues that people are currently facing and the condition that people may be in in the future. The work in this protests the idea that environmental concerns should be given top priority and that if people don’t pay attention to them now, they will suffer consequences later on.

I realised that the significance of secondary research is a really important factor. Learning more about a subject is the first step in deciding to work on a project about it. There are many excellent painters in the world, and you can view their work in advance to draw inspiration and learn from them as part of the vital secondary research. Since I want to remain in my comfort zone, I believe the project’s issue should be incredibly solid. I have to continually remind myself to push outside my comfort zone when working on this project because doing so will make life more fascinating and lively.

Intentions

In my opinion, the first reason for me to do this project is to break through myself and try the creation of electronic-style sound artwork that I have not touched before, so I chose to create with the theme of future fusion technology. Secondly, I want to do something interesting and show an imagined future world through this project. Use such a sound work to show a different world ruled by AI. People live in dungeons, robots are dancing, mutated animals and plants are talking and barking. As the result, I hope this work can use a black humorous way to tell everyone to protect the environment and not to be addicted to electronic products. It is human beings who drive technology forward instead of letting technology control and rule human beings.

Secondary Research

  • Gallery Discovery – 180 Studios
  • This is an exhibition I saw at the 180 Studios before. When I saw these two art works, I felt a sense of the future fusion in my mind. Also, that human beings in the future world have fallen into the abyss with the deterioration of the environment be shown at those two art works.

First Research

  • Sketches
  • During the process of doing the project, there will always be confusion and no ideas at the beginning, , and when I encounter this situation, I usually draw some random sketches first, so as to expand my thinking.
  • As far as I can see, that I want to say that I could do a futuristic project about robots ruling the human world.
